I would be willing to bet, almost nobody knew the winners of the first "Top Gun" competition were black. It was won by a team of four avaitors from Tuskegee University. I had the pleasure and honor to meet and photograph Col. James Harvey III for a class project.
For me, this was a defining moment in my quest to become the photographer I want to be. I wanted to capture his strength, his character and all he went thru to become the "Best of the Best." It was an honor to photograph him, I hope I did him justice.
